Hedges

What is a hedge exactly?

A hedge is shrubs and trees planted close together to form a continuous row.

Hedges can be a great addition to a garden, serving as a superb living background, screen or wall to divide the green space into separate areas. They provide privacy and are a much more effective wind break than walls or fences.

Wildlife

Hedges can be a fantastic source for shelter, cover and fruit for animals.

Planting multiple varieties of hedge species can provide flowers, fruit and leaves at different periods in the year which will attract wildlife all year round.

Hedge trimming

One of the checks we would carry out, upon providing a hedge trimming quotation and commencement of the job, would be to confirm if there are any nesting chicks in the hedge.

It is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy, the nest of any wild bird, while it is in use or being built.

Read more at the RSPB website on the law.

Should there be any nests in use, we would reschedule the job until the chicks had fledged i.e. left the nest. This would be monitored every two weeks or so, upon arrangement with the client.
